In autumn 2024, the delay in the delivery of M1A1 Abrams tanks, which the More than the US: Australia to transfer 49 M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, was widely discussed.

For almost a year there was no news about the equipment, which is so necessary on the battlefields against the Russian occupiers, and now, finally, an important message has arrived.

Here's What We Know

Ukraine's newly appointed Defence Minister Denys Smyhal has confirmed that most of the 49 Australian Abrams are already in Ukraine and performing combat missions. The remaining vehicles will arrive shortly.

This significant reinforcement was part of a $245 million military aid package, which is part of the total $1.5 billion Australia has provided since the outbreak of full-scale war.

Australia continues to support Ukraine and remains one of the top providers of military aid among non-NATO countries.

The Abrams is a third-generation main battle tank manufactured by the United States. The tank is named in honour of General Creighton Abrams, former Chief of Staff of the US Army and commander of US forces in Vietnam from 1968 to 1972. The Abrams is a heavily armed, armoured, mobile combat vehicle designed to fight in a variety of environments.
