In South Korea, an electric Xiaomi SU7 Max has been spotted on a motorway near Hyundai's headquarters in Seoul. The car with temporary number plates was being transported on a tow truck, and according to Bloter, Hyundai has officially received permission to operate it for research purposes.

Here's What We Know

According to industry sources, in addition to the Seoul office, several SU7s are also at the Namyang Research and Development Centre. Everything indicates that Hyundai is actively studying the Chinese novelty, paying attention to both design and technical characteristics.

Hyundai's interest in the SU7 is directly related to the growing influence of Chinese brands like BYD and Xiaomi on the industry. In January, Hyundai Motor Group chairman Chung Euisun emphasised at a New Year's briefing the need to not only compete with Tesla, but also to be ready for challenges from fast-growing Chinese companies.

Hyundai has increased its total investment budget by 19 per cent to 24.3 trillion won (about $17.5 billion) in 2024, with nearly half of the amount (11.5 trillion won or about $8.3 billion) earmarked for research and development. These investments include, among other things, the development of autopilot and the improvement of on-board vehicle systems.

Hyundai may pay special attention to the SU7 infotainment system. The Chinese sedan features an advanced digital dashboard and a system similar to Hyundai's proprietary Pleos Connect. The Korean automaker is expected to closely analyse these solutions to improve its own user experience.
