GPD has unveiled an unusual Win 5 handheld console that impresses with its performance, but leaves questions about the feasibility of such a device due to one controversial design decision.

Here's What We Know

GPD Win 5 will be the world's first model based on the latest AMD Ryzen AI Max 385 and 395 processors from the Strix Halo line. The device will be available in two configurations: with 8 cores and 32 GPU units or with 16 cores and 40 Radeon 8060S graphics units, comparable in performance to the desktop RTX 4060.

According to preliminary tests, Win 5 shows impressive performance: over 200 FPS in Black Myth: Wukong. This makes it one of the most powerful portable gaming systems on the market, but the gadget's creators made a controversial decision and abandoned the inbuilt battery. Instead, an external 80Wh battery is used, which is connected via a DC port. Given the TDP of up to 75W, this raised questions about the real mobility of the device and the possibility of using it outside the home.

The console features a 7″ LTPS display with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, refresh rate of up to 120Hz and a brightness of 500 nits. Despite the powerful stuffing, the console's body remains compact: 267×112×24 mm excluding the battery.

When We Can Expect It

The GPD Win 5 will be unveiled on 1 August at the Chinajoy 2025 show in Shanghai. Sales are scheduled to start in October, with an estimated price of over $1500 for the top-end configuration.
