The Kia EV4 electric car has proven its quality in real-world conditions. The manufacturer claims that after more than 110,000 kilometres on public roads, the battery has remained in almost perfect condition, with a residual capacity drop of just 5%.

Here's What We Know

The EV4 is Kia's first all-electric sedan. In Europe, the model is also available in a hatchback body, which is also a debut for the brand. To confirm the reliability of the EV4, Kia engineers conducted comprehensive tests both on normal roads and in extreme conditions. After 110,000 kilometres on public roads and over 10,000 kilometres at the Nürburgring, the battery retained 95% of its capacity (SOH, State of Health).

The company attributes this high result to the introduction of a fourth-generation battery with a new thermal management system. The coolant is distributed evenly throughout the cells, which helps to extend battery life and maintain stable performance even under near-extreme loads, such as at the Nürburgring. There, the EV4 also proved resilient to intense "hypercharging" between track sessions.

Kia guarantees that the EV4 will retain at least 70 per cent of its battery capacity after 160,000 kilometres or eight years of use.

The sedan (or fastback) bodied model went on sale in the UK less than a fortnight ago, priced from £40,895 ($55,000). It is fitted with an 81.4 kWh battery that provides a range of up to 380 miles (612 kilometres).

The hatchback, unveiled earlier in July, is available with a choice of two battery versions: 58.2 or 81.4 kWh. The starting price is £34,695 ($47,700).

Later this year, Kia will bring the EV4 to the US market as well. The US version will get a NACS standard charging connector for Tesla Supercharger stations and a range of up to 330 miles (531 kilometres) EPA cycle. Exact pricing has not yet been named, but the starting price is expected to be $35,000.
