Authoritative technoblogger and insider Moore's Law Is Dead on his YouTube channel shared exclusive information about the specifications of the next-generation PlayStation 6 and Sony's handheld console, which is being developed under the codename Canis.

Here's What We Know

So far, all information is preliminary, as the PS6 release is still a few years away - Moore's Law Is Dead optimistically predicts the console will be released in autumn 2027 or early 2028. What he does know is that Sony plans to use the same strategy as it did at the PS4 launch: offer customers a powerful console at an affordable price.

Possible PlayStation 6 specs:

  • Chiplet-based architecture (possibly using AMD Navi 5);
  • 8 cores Zen 6 or newer;
  • 40-48 RDNA 5 compute units above 3GHz;
  • PS4 and PS5 backwards compatibility support (possibly PS3 as well);
  • 160 or 192-bit bus with GDDR7;
  • 160W power consumption
  • bandwidth - up to 32GT/s;
  • bitmap graphics performance - about 3 times faster than PS5;
  • potential use of 3nm process technology.

Possible specifications for the Canis handheld console:

  • 3nm process monolithic chip;
  • 4 Zen 6c cores;
  • 12-20 RDNA 5 blocks at 1.6-2 GHz;
  • PS4 and PS5 backwards compatibility;
  • LPDDR5X-7500+, 128-bit bus;
  • 15W power consumption;
  • microSD, M.2 SSD support;
  • touchscreen;
  • USB-C with video output;
  • vibration response;
  • two microphones.

Notably, while the handheld console will be half the performance of the PS5, it will outperform its main competitor, the ROG Xbox Ally X from Microsoft and ASUS.
