Huawei has recently introduced the MatePad Pro 2025 series, but rumours about the MatePad Pro 2026 have already emerged. According to information on Weibo, Huawei is going to implement a full-fledged desktop interface in the new versions of HarmonyOS. The informant claims that Huawei is literally launching desktop applications, which will blur the line between tablets and computers. Although it is very easy to implement this nowadays, it is hard to believe in practice.

All modern mobile operating systems are based on the code of full-fledged desktop operating systems. Android and its numerous clones are based on Linux, iPadOS on iOS X, and the now-defunct Windows 10 Mobile on Windows 10. And although the ability to run full-fledged applications was cut out of them, it is relatively easy to return this functionality. But no one does it for a reason.

Control and control again

By creating a special version of applications, each developer can strictly control the interface and implement only those controls that are convenient on the touch screen. It is easier for the manufacturer to create a separate type of application that will run in windows and imitate "full-fledged" applications than to launch a zoo of real ones.

Almost no one needs it

The vast majority of users use a tablet to watch videos, navigate the internet, and play games. A small proportion use tablets for drawing. And very few people actually consider a tablet for video editing, programming, or other professional tasks. No one is going to sacrifice the stability and appearance of the entire system for the sake of these enthusiasts. After all, if they really want to do this, there is a flood of emulators.

But it can still happen

The power of modern mobile devices has come close to the power of computers. Apple has unified the characteristics of the iPad Pro and Mac Book Air. Even the Nintendo Switch console works perfectly well both as a portable device and as a stationary game console. This excites the brains of enthusiasts around the world and makes them look for ways to break the barrier and use a tablet as a computer. There are serious doubts that any of the manufacturers are seriously considering the implementation of running old desktop applications, but the new implementation is figuratively ripe and hanging in the air. Huawei certainly has talented engineers and developers, so hopefully the company will eventually be able to find the formula for this philosopher's stone and revitalise the tablet market.
