Several first-generation Sonos Roam owners have reported that their portable speakers overheat and even melt around the USB-C port while charging, sometimes accompanied by a burnt plastic smell and smoke effects. Similar cases have been documented on Reddit and in the official Sonos user community.

What Sonos says

The company has already responded with a statement that the number of such cases is very small, probably influenced by environmental conditions, because it is summer ;-P.

The company is not conducting a device recall campaign, but plans to release a firmware update to reduce charging speeds.

Who is affected

The problem only affects the first generation of Roam, released in 2021. The Roam 2, introduced in May 2024, has not yet been spotted with similar issues. Sonos has replaced some devices for users who have contacted the company with evidence of the malfunction. Even if the cases are few and far between, Sonos is a premium quality brand, so such stories hit the trust of users.

Everyone wants good battery life and fast charging, but you have to be careful with physics. If smartphones have temperature sensors, including in the battery itself, then less intelligent technology can give you unpleasant surprises, so be careful. Remember, appliances should not be placed in open sunlight. It is very dangerous to leave any equipment on charge unattended. Take care of yourself!
