The new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 has managed to become a sales hit in several countries, but in terms of repairs, it's a disaster. The experts at iFixit conducted a complete disassembly of the device and gave it a measly 3 out of 10 points for repairability. And that's at a price point of $2000 or more
Key takeaways from the Fold7 disassembly:
- Glued-in displays, both external and internal: it's nearly impossible to replace without risk
- The internal display is so fragile that it can be damaged by... a fingernail
- The battery is difficult to remove despite two independent sections
- The main cable runs through a loop, making disassembly difficult.
- Complete disassembly is required even for minor repairs
- No spare parts even for Fold6, let alone Fold7
- Rear panel makes access to components slightly easier, but this had little impact on the overall score
Experts also criticise Samsung for not only making repairs more difficult, but also for not supplying spare parts even for older models, and thus making the Fold series effectively "disposable flagships".
Repairability rating: 3/10
