Volkswagen's new pickup truck will be built on a Chinese platform and equipped with a hybrid powertrain
New details have been revealed about the next-generation VW Amarok pick-up truck in South American specification. It will hit the market in 2027 and apart from the name will have nothing in common with the global version of the Amarok, based on the Ford Ranger. The chassis will be of Chinese origin and the powertrain will be hybrid.
Here's What We Know
The project is being realised in partnership with Chinese carmaker SAIC, and according to local media, it is based on the Maxus Interstellar X pickup truck, also known in Australia as the LDV Terron 9.
According to Motor1 Brasil, Volkswagen representatives recently held a meeting with the Argentine government, during which they confirmed: the new Amarok Hybrid will be produced at the General Pacheco plant. The assembly location was previously reported, but now the hybrid version has been officially confirmed.
It is expected that the dimensions of the new pickup will be similar to the Maxus Interstellar X (pictured above): length - 5500 mm, wheelbase - 3300 mm. Some elements of the body and interior will probably be unified, but VW is preparing a unique design of the front end. The sketch shows a full-width LED strip, a compact grille, a massive bumper and a relief bonnet.
The Chinese pickup comes with either a 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine or an all-electric version of the Maxus eTerron 9. The common frame platform for all models allows the installation of both conventional internal combustion engines and hybrid or electric powertrains. It is the hybrid variant that will be the basis for VW's new model in South America.
This Amarok will be exclusive to South America, while the current Amarok, based on the Ford Ranger, will continue to be produced in South Africa
