PS5 gains momentum: Sony's console has passed the 80 million units sold mark
Despite being criticised for its lack of exclusives and failures in the live-service genre, Sony is showing impressive sales gains for its flagship console, the PlayStation 5. According to a report for the first quarter of fiscal year 2025, the total number of PS5 units sold was 80.3 million as of 30 June 2025.
This brings the console closer to iconic competitors such as the Xbox 360 (84 million) and its own PS3 (87 million). Judging by the dynamics, PS5 has every chance not only to overtake its predecessor, but also confidently approach the results of PS4, whose sales totalled more than 117 million copies.
Here's What We Know
Sony sold 2.5 million PS5s in the last quarter, down slightly from the previous quarter (2.8 million), but up from the same period last year - 100,000 fewer consoles were sold then.
On the software front, Sony also has a lot to be proud of, with nearly 66 million PS4 and PS5 games sold in the quarter, of which nearly 7 million were the company's own titles. That's 12 million more than a year earlier. And 83% of all sales came from digital versions, which is a record for Sony in a single quarter.
Top 5 best-selling consoles in history (as of August 2025)
- PS2 - 155 million
- Nintendo DS - 154 million
- Switch - 140+ million
- PS4 - 117 million
- Game Boy / GBA - 118 million
→ PS5 - 80.3 million and growing
Although Sony's failed experiments with live-service gaming - including the cancellation of a number of projects and the closure of certain services - have been rather disappointing - the single-player gaming trend continues to show steady growth. Obviously, the audience still appreciates quality story-based titles, in the creation of which Sony is traditionally strong.
