A glitch in Google Maps is forcing some Rivian owners to reboot their devices every day
Google Maps recently became the main navigation system in electric SUVs and pickup trucks of the American brand Rivian. For some users, the software update turned out to be a constant failure.
Here's What We Know
In July, Rivian released a software update with Google Maps integration, including features such as Google Places and real-time data on lane closures and accidents reported by the Google Maps community. However, some Rivian owners have begun reporting that their navigation systems often freeze after the update.
Rivian drivers have taken to Reddit to detail their experiences with the system. It is reported that the only way to fix the constant navigation freezes is to perform a soft reset of the infotainment system. This can be done by holding down the left and right-most keys on the steering wheel for about 15 seconds.
Interestingly, this problem does not seem to affect all Rivian cars. Owners of the newer R1S and R1T Gen2 models say the updated system with Google integration works without issue. Several drivers of earlier Gen1 models have also not identified any problems after the update.
In one case, the owner said the navigation tab on the infotainment display stops responding every two to three days and needs to be reset. Even when it works, it continues to assume it is at home even when it is not. Another R1S owner in a Reddit thread says that he hasn't had any hang-up issues, but the search function no longer works.
A software issue is likely to blame, and if Rivian is aware of this fault, it may already be developing a fix. In the meantime, owners facing this issue will have to continue to reboot their systems every few days.
