Finland's Kempower is the first electric vehicle charging station manufacturer to implement the CableGuard security system developed by Formula Space UK. The solution is designed to combat the increase in theft and vandalism of charging cables.

Here's What We Know

CableGuard combines a rubberised protective sleeve with a marking system that resembles the technology used to mark cash when carried in collection vehicles. When an attempt is made to damage a cable, a special high-pressure liquid is ejected and splashes onto the intruder and surrounding objects. It is visible in ultraviolet light and allows the criminal to be identified. Formula Space claims its system is 100 per cent crime proof in court and reduces the likelihood of a second attack by 98 per cent.

Kempower has confirmed CableGuard compatibility with Satellites, Station Chargers and Movable Chargers with CCS2 and CHAdeMO connectors. The approval follows an accelerated eight-week trial. The device can be installed without removing the cable and has little or no impact on usability.

Although Kempower was the first manufacturer to approve CableGuard, the system itself was created with input from UK CPO operator InstaVolt, which is already using it. Meanwhile, the market for protective charging solutions is growing, with Evolt Charging previously introducing a Cable Alarm that reacts to an attempt to cut a cable, and ChargePoint and Tesla introducing cut-protected cables.
