Meta has reached an important milestone: its Threads social platform now has more than 400 million monthly active users - that's 50 million more than in April and almost two and a half times more than a year ago, when the platform celebrated its first birthday with 175 million users.

Here's What We Know

According to analysts at Similarweb, Threads hit a record high in popularity among mobile users in June 2025, with 115.1 million people visiting the social network daily, up 128 per cent from a year earlier. Meanwhile, its main competitor X has 132 million users, but is losing audience - down 15% year-over-year. In the US, the gap is even smaller: 15.3 million for Threads versus 22.9 million for X.

However, Threads' web version is still lagging behind: 6.9 million daily visits versus X's 145.8 million. Despite this, Threads is actively developing its ecosystem, from integrating with Mastodon and other fediverse networks to introducing APIs, support for private messaging and custom feeds.

Against the backdrop of X's declining popularity and growing distrust from advertisers, Threads is steadily consolidating its position. While Mark Zuckerberg's goal of 1 billion users is still a long way off, the current growth rate shows that the platform is moving in the right direction and could reach the desired numbers in a few years.

Flashback

Threads was launched in July 2023 as an alternative to X (formerly Twitter) and immediately attracted attention - 100 million registrations in the first few days. Since then, the platform has been actively developing, adding new features and expanding its audience. According to Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri, Threads has evolved from a "crazy idea" into a full-fledged platform for open sharing.
