Sony has left Russia for good: PlayStation, music, cinema and mobile services shut down
Sony Mobile Communications Rus, a subsidiary of the Japanese concern, has officially ceased operations in the Russian Federation: the company was liquidated on 11 August 2025, according to the Russian register of legal entities. This completes Sony's 18-year presence in the Russian market - since 2006.
Sony's first steps towards an exit had already been taken in 2023, but an attempt to halt operations was rejected. After a previous unsuccessful attempt to close the business, the liquidation documents were filed again in October 2024.

After the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Sony suspended PlayStation shipments, closed the PlayStation Store and halted film distribution, and folded its music business. In 2024 finalised the closure of branded shops due to lack of stock.
Sony's complete withdrawal from Russian Federation is part of a broad trend: more than 60 per cent of major Western companies have stopped operating in Russian Federation since the conflict began.
