Group calls in WhatsApp got smarter: scheduling, reactions, notifications
WhatsApp has introduced several features that should make group calls more convenient and predictable. Now you can not just call in a chat "at a whim", but plan a meeting in advance and invite all the necessary participants.
What has changed
On the "Calls" tab, just press "plus" and select "Schedule a call". The app will prompt you to specify the date, time and participants. Scheduled calls can be edited, people can be added or removed, and a link can be shared, which is easy to put in your personal calendar. Before the meeting starts, WhatsApp will remind all invitees that it's time to connect.
Another new feature is interactivity during a conversation. There is a "show of hands" function to politely take the floor without interrupting others. For quick reactions you can use emoji right during the call - so you can show your emotions without interfering in the conversation.
Links to calls have also become "smarter" - now the user who created a link to a call will receive notifications if someone joins by invitation. This is especially useful for work or open groups, where it is important to understand who joins the conversation and when.
All calls are protected by end-to-end encryption, as before.
