A Nissan Qashqai has travelled the whole of the UK on a single tank of petrol
Nissan has repeated its long-standing fuel efficiency record: the Qashqai crossover with an e-Power hybrid unit has driven the legendary 837-mile (1,347km) route from Land's End to John o'Groats on a single tank of petrol. This is a route that runs the entire length of the island of Great Britain between the two extremities - the south-west and north-east.
Here's What We Know
During the run, engineers achieved a consumption of 75 miles per gallon (3.76 litres/100km) - better than the official WLTP cycle figure of 62.8 miles per gallon (4.5 litres/100km). The new Qashqai started with a tank that is 10 litres less than the first-generation diesel version, which made a similar run in 2007 with 67.35 miles per gallon (4.2 l/100 km).
The journey took 18 hours over two days and the crossover arrived at its destination with around 100 miles (160km) more fuel to spare.

The peculiarity of the e-Power system is that the 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine does not drive the wheels directly, but works as a generator for a small 1.8 kWh battery that powers the electric motor. The engine produces 201bhp and 330N-m, and after a recent update has received a compact five-in-one unit (motor, generator, inverter, overdrive and underdrive gearboxes).
Nissan representatives didn't reveal the average speed and driving style during the test, but admitted that careful driving can produce noticeably better results than lab measurements.
