AUDI E5 Sportback with 773km range and 59-inch display opens pre-orders in China
In China, pre-orders for the new AUDI E5 Sportback - an electric station wagon created together with SAIC. The car received an advanced autopilot Momenta and a giant 59-inch screen in the cabin.
Here's What We Know
The novelty is offered in four versions with rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive at a price from 235,900 to 319,900 yuan ($32,800-44,500). The model is based on the new Advanced Digitised Platform (ADP) with 800-volt architecture. Audi claims that 10 minutes of charging time is enough to top up its 370 kilometres of range.
Curiously, the E5 comes under a separate AUDI sub-brand - without the usual four rings on the emblem. This is part of the Volkswagen Group's "in China for China" strategy to distance itself from the image of the traditional German brand and emphasise local development.
The base version of the Pioneer is rear-wheel drive, with a 220 kW (299 hp) electric motor and a 76 kWh SAIC-CATL LFP battery. Range on the CLTC cycle - 618 km, acceleration from a place to 100 km/h - 6.1 s.
The flagship modification Flagship Quattro - all-wheel drive with two motors: 200 kW at the front and 379 kW at the rear. The combined output is 579 kW (776 hp), acceleration to 100 km/h takes 3.4 seconds. The CATL NMC battery has a capacity of 100 kWh and provides up to 647 kilometres of driving range.
The dimensions of the E5 Sportback are 4881×1960×1479 mm with a wheelbase of 2950 mm. Most of the key components are localised: engines are produced by a SAIC subsidiary, batteries are assembled by SAIC-CATL JV, and final assembly is carried out at SAIC Volkswagen in Shanghai. The model is designed exclusively for the Chinese market.
The electric car is equipped with 27 sensors, including Hesai lidar, three millimetre radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors and 11 cameras. All information is fed into Momenta's ADAS system and processed by Nvidia's Orin X chip for automated driving.
In the cabin, there's a 59-inch panoramic LED screen and a proprietary Audi OS system based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chip. The inbuilt Doubao voice assistant from ByteDance (owner of TikTok) promises advanced voice control and natural speech understanding.
Deliveries of the AUDI E5 Sportback will start in September. Audi plans to launch two additional AUDI-branded models in China in the next two years.
