Google announced at its Made by Google event on 20 August 2025 that the new Pixel 10 line has switched from UFS 3.1 to the much faster UFS 4.0. However, it turned out that UFS 4.0 is not available in all smartphones - it all depends on the amount of memory.

Not just UFS 4.0, but Zoned UFS

In 2024, SK Hynix announced a new memory standard called Zoned UFS (hereinafter referred to as ZUFS). Funnily enough, this technology has actually become the exact opposite of hard drive defragmentation technology. The UFS drive is supposedly divided into a certain number of zones. Parts of one file are written and read in parallel in several zones at the same time, which increases the speed of memory access. According to SK Hynix, the memory access speed increases by up to 45% in application startup operations. In addition, this technology should make better use of the flash drive's resource, as it reduces the size of dead zones, where files are written that never change. SK Hynix claims that ZUFS has shown 40% less wear and tear.

What versions of memory did Pixel 10 get?

Google has not officially commented on the memory situation in its smartphones. Judging by the information available at the moment, the situation is as follows:

  • 128 GB Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro - UFS 3.1 manufactured by Samsung
  • 256 GB Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, 10 Pro Fold - UFS 4.0
  • 512 GB and 1 TB Pixel 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, 10 Pro Fold - UFS 4.0 ZUFS

So, if the memory standard is important to you, be careful when choosing a model.
