Less than two weeks after it became known about the departure of the Electrified G80 sedan from the American market, another news followed: Hyundai Motor's plant in Alabama has started production of the electric GV70. Formally, it is a pause, but the company does not specify the terms of its end, which puts the future of the model in question.

Here's What We Know

Production stopped back in June. Moreover, the publication claims that it is not a temporary measure, but the complete exclusion of the electric crossover from the assembly programme.

The GV70 was the only Genesis electric model to be assembled in the US. Production began in February 2023, but volumes were modest: only 1,367 units were assembled between January and July 2024 - 18.3 per cent less than a year earlier. March was a particular failure, with only 93 cars leaving the factory.

In an official comment, a spokesperson for the brand said:

"Genesis has suspended assembly of the Electrified GV70 at the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama plant, optimising production plans. Production for the U.S. market will resume, with details to be announced at a later date. The model is available at U.S. dealers and will remain part of the brand's electric line-up along with the GV60."

Despite low demand, Genesis continues to upgrade the electric crossover. In the autumn, the model was updated for the 2026 model year, replacing the 77.4 kWh battery with a new one that nominally holds 84 kWh. This may suggest that the brand isn't going to give up on the GV70 EV, although sales are still far from expected.
