Google has decided to throw a bonus to Gemini users: this weekend only, the service has opened free access to Veo 3 - a system of video generation with the help of artificial intelligence. Usually only subscribers of paid AI Pro or Ultra plans can "feel" such technologies, but now even free accounts have a chance to get a mini-cinema in the browser.

Here's What We Know

According to a post on the X Google Gemini App, free-users can create three videos without paying. The restriction is tight: only three 8-second clips, and only until Sunday 22:00 Pacific Time (that's 1:00 New York City time and 6:00 London time on Monday).

Veo 3 videos are accompanied by audio - and that can be both a plus and a surprise. If you don't specify in the request exactly what you want to sound, the system will add "something of its own."

How Veo 3 works

Subscribers to AI Pro plans typically get three generations per day (for $19.99 per month), as well as access to the Flow editor, where you can create higher quality videos.

The engine itself is able to turn photos into animated scenes: just describe what should happen in the picture, and in a couple of minutes a short clip appears. You can also set the scenario from scratch: specify the actions of characters, image style, camera angle and even mood.

But it's worth remembering that Veo 3 is far from perfect. Sometimes the result is pleasing, and sometimes it produces strange glitches - as if the editing was done after a sleepless night.

Nevertheless, the next couple of days are a great opportunity to see what Google can do with generative video and decide whether it's worth paying for it every month.
