The Xterra's frame construction and all-wheel drive made the Xterra one of Nissan's iconic SUVs in the U.S. market. It's been a decade since it was discontinued and according to Automotive News, Nissan announced the model's revival at a recent meeting with dealers.

Here's What We Know

The new Nissan Xterra is expected to premiere in 2028. Details are still scarce, but sources are calling the upcoming model an "affordable midsize SUV with brutal design." The model will allegedly get rectangular headlights, a massive grille and an overall "campy" styling.

The next-generation Xterra should be based on the frame platform on which Frontier, Pathfinder and Infiniti QX60 will also be built. Unlike previous rumours about a possible electric version, now we are talking about a hybrid based on a V6 engine. A plug-in hybrid and a range-extending version have also not been ruled out.

The return of the Xterra has been long overdue: in 2023 Nissan even registered the trademark in the US. At that time, the possibility of cooperation with Honda was discussed, which gave rise to rumours of a possible "re-badging" of the Prologue crossover. But the deal didn't materialise, and now Nissan is preparing its own generation of the SUV as part of a major model line-up refresh.
