Garmin decided to please owners of Fenix 8 watches with a major free update. It would seem that the model is already one of the top sports smart watches, but as it turned out, it had a lot of room to grow. In the new firmware version 17.28 appeared a lot of features, including those that users have long been waiting for - for example, a "smart" alarm clock.

Here's What We Know

The main new feature is the Running Economy metric. It analyses running technique by steps: length, speed, frequency and even speed loss at each foot landing (Step Speed Loss function). However, you'll need a compatible chest heart rate sensor to use it.

Athletes will also benefit from the new tools: Garmin Triathlon Coach, Running Tolerance, Projected Race Time and Suggested Finish Line. All of these tools allow you to more accurately assess your workload, predict your performance and adjust your training.

Recovery has also been given a boost, with the Fenix 8 now featuring Evening Report, an evening report that summarises the day and reminds you of what's coming up, including training and calendar events.

Of particular note is the Smart Wake Alarm, a smart alarm that wakes the wearer in a light sleep phase at a set time. This feature has been around for a long time and its absence in the Fenix 8 seemed strange, so its arrival can be called long-awaited.

The update adds multi-sport workouts, customisable focus modes and event notifications in the Notification Centre. And it's all free, which sounds especially nice in these times.
