Volvo has revealed the all-new XC70 - the brand's first ever 'long-range' plug-in hybrid. On the Chinese CLTC cycle, it is capable of travelling more than 200 kilometres on electric power - more than any of the brand's previous PHEVs.

Here's What We Know

The main features of the novelty: the model is available only in a hybrid version and combines the advantages of an electric car with the possibility of long-distance travelling. Full range with the internal combustion engine and battery is 1200 kilometres. At the same time, the XC70 supports DC fast charging: the battery is replenished to 80% in 23 minutes. Another "electric car" option is bi-directional charging, which allows to power external devices and tourist equipment. However, the V2L adapter will have to be purchased separately.

Volvo notes that XC70 is created primarily for the Chinese market, where there is a high demand for hybrids with high mileage without internal combustion engine. Later the model will appear in Europe. It is not worth waiting for it in the U.S.: because of the 100 per cent duties on Chinese cars, deliveries are unlikely.

Volvo has not yet disclosed the exact characteristics, but some of the data can be seen in the "related" crossover Lynk Co 08, produced by Geely. In the top version with a 39.6 kWh battery and one electric motor (218 hp), it is capable of travelling up to 245 km on the CLTC. The hybrid system includes a 1.5-litre turbo motor and the maximum output reaches 381 hp. There is also an all-wheel drive version with two motors rated at 593 hp, which has a slightly lower range of 220 kilometres. Also available is a modification with a 21.2 kWh battery and electric range of about 120 km.

Most likely, XC70 will get the same modifications of powertrains and batteries. In China, prices, according to preliminary data, will start just above $30 thousand - more expensive than the Lynk Co 08 ($29 thousand). In Europe, the crossover is likely to be noticeably more expensive.
