DIU hits Kalibriv carrier ship with a combined drone attack
At night, on 28 August 2025, Ukrainian intelligence units - the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine's Active Action Department and the "Primari" special group - conducted a successful attack on the Project 21631 Buyan-M small missile ship, which was located in the Sea of Azov near the occupied Crimea.
The tactics of the attack
First, a drone with a night vision camera damaged the ship's radar, making it impossible to detect and target it. Then, the Primara's special forces attacked the ship's side, causing significant damage.
The ship, which was ready to launch Kalibr cruise missiles, was damaged and forced to leave the combat duty zone in the Temryutsky Bay.
The DIU does not disclose details on how the drones were guided, as the area of operation is located beyond the Kerch Peninsula off the coast of the Krasnodar Territory of the Russian Federation - a territory controlled by the Russians for hundreds of kilometres around, and Starlink's operation in this region is blocked.
Why It Matters
"The Buyan-M is a carrier of Kalibr missiles, which Russia is actively using to shell Ukrainian cities from the sea. It is likely that the ship went on combat duty in the launch zone to take part in the shelling on 28 August.
The tactic of disabling the radar with a small drone and then destroying the enemy's expensive equipment has been used repeatedly and has become a classic. However, conducting such operations unnoticed in the enemy's distant rear is an excellent technical implementation of a highly complex task. But we know nothing about its technical side yet.
