Insider: the new Xbox console will be twice as expensive as the PlayStation 6 - all because of Steam and other third-party shops
The launch of the next-generation consoles is gradually approaching and more and more information about Sony and Microsoft's next gaming platforms is appearing online.
The American company has long since admitted defeat in the "console race" and is no longer trying to surpass PlayStation in sales, betting on the digital ecosystem. But now there is information that the next generation of Xbox may become even less attractive to buyers.
Here's What We Know
A reputable but not very public insider, Kepler L2, has reported that the new Xbox could be twice as expensive as the PlayStation 6. This is due to the fact that Microsoft Media: Microsoft is in talks with Valve to launch Steam on Xbox consoles, including the most popular ones - Steam and EGS.
In theory, this should attract new users, but this way Microsoft will stop receiving 30 per cent of the sales of each game bought through the Xbox Store. To avoid a big loss, Microsoft could go for a significant price hike on the new Xbox, making it uncompetitive against the PlayStation 6.
The big problem with supporting third-party shops is the business model, as without a guaranteed 30% revenue per game, they have to sell the device at a profit. Given that AMD Magnus is a fairly large and expensive APU, this could mean that the XSX 2 will cost twice as much as the PS6.
Kepler L2 also reported that the AMD Magnus processor will not only be used in the new Xbox console, but also in Xbox-branded PCs, while backwards compatibility with games for past generations of consoles will not be supported on Xbox PCs.
Sales of Sony and Microsoft's new consoles are expected to start in 2027-28.
