Toyota Motor Europe has announced the start of mass production of a new electric car at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech Republic (TMMCZ) plant in Kolín, Czech Republic. This will be the brand's first battery electric vehicle to be produced in Europe.

Here's What We Know

The decision was announced at a meeting at the Czech Republic's government residence by Prime Minister Petr Fiala, Industry Minister Lukáš Vlček and Toyota Motor Europe President Yoshihiro Nakata.

To start production of the new model, Toyota will invest around €680 million in the expansion and modernisation of the TMMCZ plant. The facility will be expanded from 152,000 to 173,000 square metres, new welding and painting shops and a battery assembly line will be built. The Czech government will allocate up to €64m to set up the battery production facility.

It is likely to be a compact crossover, but Toyota has not yet revealed any details about the model. It is not yet known when the production of the electric car will start. According to preliminary data, it will start in 2028.

Now the TMMCZ company produces Aygo X and Yaris Hybrid - a total of about 220,000 cars per year. The arrival of the electric car will increase the potential of the site and create new jobs, while most of the components will be purchased from Czech suppliers.

The Kolín plant has been in operation since 2002 and has already produced more than 4.5 million vehicles. Today it is one of the largest employers in the region with 3,200 employees. Since 2024, Toyota's first European logistics mega-hub has also been operating there, serving dealers in Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic.
