Mazda Motor Corporation has signed an agreement with Iwakuni City Government and Yamaguchi Prefecture to build a new plant that will produce Panasonic Energy cylindrical lithium-ion cell modular units. This is the company's first new manufacturing facility in Japan since 1992, when the second plant in Hofu began operations.

Here's What We Know

Construction of the facility, called Mazda Motor Corporation Iwakuni Plant, will begin in November 2025, with start-up scheduled for fiscal 2027. The plant will have a maximum capacity of 10 GWh of battery modules per year.

The site will be located in the Tsuzu district of Iwakuni, and will cover an area of around 190,000 m².

Mazda notes that the new plant will be a key element of its global electrification strategy, targeting different markets and customer needs. The facility will not only support the company's transition to electrified models, but will also play an important role in job creation and regional economic development.
