Xiaomi scandal: marketing director fired for leaking information
Xiaomi scandal: Wang Teng, Xiaomi's general manager of marketing in China and general manager of the Redmi brand, was fired for leaking confidential company information and conflict of interest. Wang Teng was responsible for the recent rebranding of Redmi and was actively involved in the launch of the brand's latest smartphones, for example, he was involved in the marketing support of the Redmi Note 15.
Wang Ten was active on social media, promoting the company's products, publishing teasers and answering questions. Wang Teng has worked for the company in various marketing positions since 2016, when he moved to Beijing after graduating from the Institute of Science and Technology and joined Xiaomi. He served as general manager of the Redmi brand from February 2024, and in December became the general manager of marketing for the entire company.
The high-ranking official disappeared from the public space at the end of August. Close employees said at the time that Mr Teng had gone on forced leave before being fired.
Wang Teng publicly acknowledged the mistakes in a post on Weibo. He thanked Xiaomi's management for the years of trust and support, expressed regret over his dismissal, but promised to continue to support Xiaomi and the Redmi brand. He plans to return to work after a break.
After the formal announcement, various rumours began to circulate online, including rumours that Wang Teng was working for competitors, he issued a clarification explaining that it was not about illegal activities or stealing secrets, but only about the arbitrariness he had taken on the network, which violated the company's internal standards.
Xiaomi pursues a tough marketing policy and continues to discover new product categories. Xiaomi has already been known for sudden dismissals of top executives, for example, in 2013 the company hired Hugo Barra, Vice President of Android, but in early 2017 it fired him for no apparent reason. The real head of the company is Lei Jun, who can fire anyone on a day's notice.
