Apple has shown the basic iPhone 17. The novelty has a much better screen, new chips of its own production, and better cameras, especially the front one. Contrary to rumours, the basic iPhone 17 still received full support for ProMotion - from now on, the screen is as good as the Pro version.

Details.

The basic iPhone received a new 3 nm A19 processor. It has 6 CPU cores, 5 graphics cores, and 16 Neural Engine cores. The company promises a 20% increase in graphics performance compared to the previous A18. The new processor should provide 8 hours more video playback due to optimised architecture.

The chip features second-generation Dynamic Caching technology and, for the first time, a 16-bit floating-point number processor. This means higher computing power, but it will be used in a few years. It is likely that the company has far-reaching plans to develop artificial intelligence directly on the device, and it is good that this is being incorporated into the architecture now.

After years of using its own modem chip in watches, Apple has finally moved to its use in the iPhone 17. So, the Apple C1X chip will now be responsible for mobile data transmission, and the Apple N1 chip will be responsible for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Thread.

Apple has also improved the fast charging technology, promising 50% of the battery in 20 minutes.

Cameras.

The main camera remains with two modules: 48 MP wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle. The main camera takes photos in 24 megapixel mode, and it is also responsible for a 2x zoom of "optical quality" (in fact, a crop of 48 megapixels). The ultra-wide camera takes photos in 24MP quality, but a 48MP mode will also be available for better detail. Artificial intelligence helps to seamlessly switch from one camera to another and take high-quality photos at intermediate optical distances. Artificial intelligence will also help to separate the background better in portrait mode and other complex cases.

The front camera has received an interesting update. The 18-megapixel camera has a large square sensor and now supports Central Stage and OIS technology, so if your hands are shaking and you can't fit all the people in the frame, the smartphone will do it for you. And the front-facing camera's super stabilisation will allow you to talk on video even while jogging, though it's not clear why. This is one of the most technologically advanced front-facing cameras on the market.

Screen.

Finally, it happened and Apple has completely (almost, because the iPhone 16e is still on sale) switched to ProMotion displays. As in the Pro version, the smartphone is able to dynamically change the display refresh rate from 1 to 120 Hz, including for AlwaysOn - no restrictions. The company claims 7 layers that reduce glare and it will be very interesting to compare their implementation with the Galaxy Ultra display. In addition, the smartphone received a second-generation Ceramic Shield, which is three times more scratch-resistant. The peak brightness is 3000 nits and there is XDR support - finally, a great display without compromise. The screen diagonal has increased from 6.1 to 6.3 inches, and the bezels have become even thinner.

AI.

Better late than never - the iPhone 17 will receive a number of artificial intelligence features: object recognition on the screen, text conversations, and Circle to Search. When paired with the new AirPods, the smartphone will be able to translate a live conversation - if the interlocutor does not have AirPods Pro 3, the translation will be broadcast on the screen for him, and if both interlocutors have headphones, you can fully communicate in your own language.

Prices and availability

128 GB of storage is finally a thing of the past, and the iPhone 17 will start with a 256 GB version for $800 (approximately 32,000 hryvnias plus taxes). It will go on sale on 19 September in five colours, including a new light purple shade. Pre-orders will open on 12 September.
