CATL, the world's largest battery manufacturer, showed at the IAA 2025 motor show in Munich the new Shenxing Pro battery, which promises to solve two problems of electric cars - limited range and long charging time.

Here's What We Know

The technology will be available in two variants. The first is the "Super Long Life Long Range Battery." The 122 kWh battery provides up to 756 kilometres of range on the European WLTP cycle. The actual range will obviously depend on the specific electric vehicle it is fitted to, but the preliminary figures are encouraging. CATL claims that battery charging time from 10 per cent to 80 per cent can take as little as 15 minutes.

The second version is called "Super-Fast Charging." In this case, the capacity is 110 kW⋅h, but charging from 10% to 80% is feasible in just 10 minutes. The company claims that one 10-minute charging session can increase the range on the WLTP cycle by 478 kilometres.

Shenxing Pro is based on lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) chemistry, known for durability. CATL claims the battery loses just 9% of capacity after 200,000 km of driving and retains up to 70% after a million kilometres and 10,000 charge cycles.

The key to this life is the Wave Cell design with cell-to-pack technology, where cells are integrated directly into the battery pack without intermediate modules. This increases the proportion of active battery material in a limited space and compensates for the lower energy density of LFP cells.

CATL is going into Europe in earnest: the company is investing €11bn in building plants in Germany, Hungary and Spain, as well as in creating a full cycle from raw material processing to battery production and recycling. Which carmakers will get Shenxing Pro first has not been announced yet.
