AI translation not for everyone: key AirPods Pro 3 feature not available to EU users
The AirPods Pro 3 headphones that were announced at Apple's big September presentation generated a lot of interest, primarily due to the new Live Translation AI synchronised translation feature AI translation isn't just on the AirPods Pro 3: Apple has extended the feature to two older models of the headphones.
The Live Translation option is extremely useful and relevant, but it turns out that its availability will be limited.
Here's What We Know
Apple clarified that at release, AI translation via AirPods 3 will not be available in the European Union and by users with European accounts.
The US company did not specify what this restriction is due to, but recall that the EU has strict requirements for services provided by AI. In particular, the EU Artificial Intelligence Act and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) set strict requirements for speech and translation services.
EU regulators are likely investigating how Live Translation technology works and whether it meets privacy requirements. Most likely, when all formalities will be settled, European users of AirPods Pro 3 will be able to fully enjoy the advanced features. Until then, learn languages and use Google Translate, especially since Live Translate has recently been introduced to make international communication easier.
AirPods Pro 3 will go on sale on 19 September for $249. Pre-orders are already open.
