Tesla has abruptly removed the rear-wheel-drive Cybertruck (RWD) version from its website, which cost $69,990 and had a range of up to 350 miles (563 kilometres) on the US EPA cycle. The lineup now starts with an all-wheel-drive version for $72,490 with a $7,500 tax credit. This bonus will cease to apply on 30 September and then the base price will be $79,990.

Here's What We Know

The RWD version was introduced in April. In addition to rear-wheel drive, it featured simpler equipment: no adaptive suspension, reduced towing and payload capabilities, and no screen for rear passengers. Elon Musk's company (Elon Musk) did not explain why it dropped the simplest version of the Cybertruck.

Meanwhile, sales of the electric pickup truck continue to fall. According to Cox Automotive, Tesla sold 4,306 units of the Cybertruck in the second quarter of 2025 - down 50 per cent from a year earlier. Since the beginning of the year, 10,712 vehicles have been sold, down 7% from last year. The cancellation of federal tax credits in the US is expected to further reduce demand for both the Cybertruck and electric vehicles in general.
