Volkswagen is once again pushing back the launch dates of key electric vehicles. According to Handelsblatt, production of the electric ID. Golf and ID. Roc in Wolfsburg will not start until 2030. Initially, the ID. Golf was planned for 2028, then 2029, and ID. Roc was expected in 2029. Now the first crossover on the new SSP platform will be released ID. Roc in the summer of 2030, followed by the ID. Golf.

Here's What We Know

According to sources, the reasons for the delay are the high cost of the transition to electric vehicles, weak EV sales and unresolved issues with the organisation of production. The concern notes that funds for the development and modernisation of plants are limited. Additionally, the transfer of the assembly of the petrol Golf to Mexico is postponed, which blocks the preparation of the site in Wolfsburg for the production of models on the SSP platform.

Other models will also be affected: the transfer of the ID.3 and Cupra Born from Zwickau to Wolfsburg, scheduled for 2027, is also delayed. However, according to VW's new naming strategy, the ID.3 will probably later be merged with the ID. Golf.

In parallel, Volkswagen has officially confirmed its willingness to attract outside investors to its battery division PowerCo, which is building three cell plants in Germany, Spain and Canada. According to sources, this decision is strongly backed by the Porsche-Piech family (Porsche-Piech), the group's major shareholder.
