Xiaomi is recalling more than 115,000 copies of its popular SU7 electric car in China due to problems with the driver assistance systems. The decision was made after a high-profile accident six months ago, in which three students died - their SU7 crashed into a concrete barrier at a speed of 97 km / h with activated system Navigate on Autopilot.

Here's What We Know

The PRC State Administration of Market Regulation revealed that the SU7's driver assistance system has "insufficient recognition capabilities and may not provide adequate obstacle detection and driver warning in certain scenarios", which is required for Level 2 and Level 2+ systems. The agency specified that the system may not provide sufficient warnings of its performance in extreme situations when the Highway Assist is activated.

The recall involves 116,887 SU7 vehicles manufactured between February 2024 and August 2025. This represents about 38 per cent of the 305,055 electric cars of this model sold in China since sales began in early 2024.

Xiaomi confirmed that the problem will be fixed through a wireless software update, eliminating the need for physical service.

The recall coincides with the introduction of new safety standards in China for cars equipped with Level 2 driver assistance systems. These stricter requirements will come into effect in 2027.

The most serious incident involving the SU7 occurred in March on the Dezhou-Shanzhao motorway. According to Chinese media, the vehicle was travelling at 116 km/h with the Navigate on Autopilot system activated.

The system allegedly detected an "obstacle ahead" and started braking as it approached a roadworks zone. The driver intervened by turning the steering wheel to the left and applying the brake moderately, then gradually back to the right. Moments later, the vehicle collided with a concrete barrier and caught fire. All three passengers died.
