Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has a more affordable version, but not for everyone
In an effort to make high-performance models more affordable, Hyundai has introduced in Korea a new Ioniq 5 N with a lower price but without major compromises in performance. The version is called the Ioniq 5 N Essential.
What are the differences?
From the outside, the Essential is indistinguishable from the standard N version. It gets a full aerodynamic dodger, full LED optics and 21-inch forged wheels. The interior also replicates the original with two 12.3-inch displays, sports seats, leather steering wheel, dual-zone climate control and an eight-speaker Bose audio system.
The Essential is trimmed down in minor amenities: the projection display, wireless charging and V2L connector for powering external devices are missing. Also excluded are a digital key, power rear door windows with safety function and an intelligent lighting system. The driver assistance package is simplified but remains rich enough for daily use.
The technical basis of the Ioniq 5 N remains unchanged. Two electric motors produce a total of 601 hp, the rear axle has a friction differential and the battery capacity is 84 kWh. In addition, the sporty crossover retains all the features that make it special: N e-Shift, N Launch Control, N Pedal, N Drift Optimizer Pro, N Torque Distribution and N Active Sound+.
So how much does the more affordable N version cost? Including local incentives, the Essential will cost 74,900,000 won ($53,700) versus 77,400,000 won ($55,500) for the regular version. The saving is 2,500,000 won ($1,800). By comparison, the only US version of the Ioniq 5 N starts at $66,200.
The N lineup from the Korean brand is expected to expand with electric and petrol models. Following the recent debut of the Ioniq 6 N sedan, Hyundai has confirmed the development of the Ioniq 3 N compact hot-hatch and the next-generation i20 N with a hybrid powertrain.
