During Tokyo Game Show 2025 Capcom presented a story trailer of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, which will be the first completely new game of the once popular franchise in 20 years.

Here's What We Know

In the spectacular video the developer reminded that the main character of the game will be an experienced warrior Miyamoto Musashi, who was killed in battle, but was brought back to life and became the owner of the glove Oni. He now hears the voice of the glove and dedicates his life to fighting the demons that terrorise Edo-era Japan.

In his wanderings, Miyamoto meets another Oni glove wielder, the young actress Izumo no Okuni. Interestingly, both Miyamoto and Izumo no Okuni are real historical characters, and the appearance of the main character was given by the famous Japanese film actor Toshiro Mifune, who was the star of samurai films.

In addition to the spectacular staged scenes, the trailer shows some gameplay shots, which look dynamic and leave no doubt that the combat system of Onimusha: Way of the Sword will give gamers a lot of positive emotions.

When We Can Expect It

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is expected to be released in 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Flashback

There will be no open world in Onimusha: Way of the Sword, as the game is being created with maximum focus on the older parts of the series, including Onimusha: Warlords. Players will be offered to defend against demons in spacious, semi-open locations, switching between them as the story progresses.

Despite the lack of an open world, Way of the Sword will be Onimusha's longest instalment: the main story alone will take over 20 hours to complete, and with additional activities, it will take much longer.

Onimusha is based on real historical events and personalities, which are organically integrated into the dark fantasy universe.
