Volvo Cars has opened order intake for the 2026 model year Volvo EX90 with updated hardware and software. With a new 800-volt electric system, the EX90 charges faster, while upgrades to the main computer provide new and improved safety, collision avoidance and driver support features.

Here's What We Know

Among the new features: warnings for slippery roads, hazards and accidents ahead, as well as the integration of automatic emergency call with Emergency Stop Assist (ESA).

ESA is designed to bring the vehicle to a controlled stop in a lane if the driver fails to respond to attention warnings or does not have his or her hands on the wheel, for example due to a sudden ailment. Once stopped, the new emergency call function will automatically connect the car to Volvo Cars' emergency call centre, which can contact passengers and call the response services if necessary.

Other innovations include an enhanced automatic emergency steering function for darkness and Park Pilot assistant for parallel parking.

By switching to a mainframe with dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin processors, the EX90 now has a processing power of 500 TOPS (trillion operations per second), allowing Volvo Cars to further advance safety and performance through data, software and AI.

The upgrade is not limited to the new EX90: owners of the 2025 model will receive a one-time free upgrade to the mainframe computer through a scheduled visit to a Volvo service centre.

"The additional processing power allows us to utilise AI, data and software capabilities to further improve the safety and overall performance of the EX90," notes Anders Bell, chief technology officer of Volvo Cars. - "This means we can provide customers with advanced safety and driver support features, as well as continuous improvements to infotainment and battery management - all delivered over the air.

Compared to the previous model year's 400-volt system, the new 800-volt architecture reduces heat generation during charging, enabling faster charging speeds. Charging performance is further enhanced by proprietary battery management software. Using a clever algorithm, it works in tandem with the 800-volt system to optimise charging, adding up to 250km of range in just 10 minutes.

The 800-volt technology also provides more power for quick acceleration with more efficient energy utilisation.

Additionally, the EX90 gets an electrochromic panoramic roof, first introduced on the recently launched Volvo ES90. You can change the degree of darkening of the glass at the touch of a button.
