Bentley has abandoned the idea of becoming an all-electric car brand
Bentley has abandoned its goal of switching to purely electric cars, previously planned for 2035. Future flagship models will once again include petrol versions.
Here's What We Know
Bentley's future has taken another unexpected turn. Today, spies spotted the brand's electric crossover on test, but the company is abandoning plans to go all-electric. It's another U-turn for Bentley, which originally aimed to sell only electric cars by 2030, then pushed that date to 2035, and now it's unknown when.
In an interview with Autocar, Bentley CEO Frank-Steffen Walliser, shifted responsibility for the change to Audi and Porsche. The three brands are closely related as they share common platforms, powertrains and components. As a result, their decision to continue the existence of internal combustion engines has affected Bentley.
This means we can expect petrol versions of the next generations of the Bentayga, Continental and Flying Spur. This is ostensibly a concession to North America and the Middle East, which have shown no interest in electric luxury cars.
However, Bentley still plans to launch a new plug-in hybrid or electric car every year from 2026 onwards. This programme will start with an electric crossover Urban SUV and continue with a greater emphasis on plug-in hybrids.
