At the end of September, it became known that $100 billion deal: NVIDIA and OpenAL enter strategic partnership to expand AI infrastructure aimed at expanding AI infrastructure. And now Sam Altman’s company is joining forces with NVIDIA’s main competitor — AMD.

What is known

AMD officially announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI — one of the leaders in generative AI. As part of the agreement, OpenAI plans to deploy up to 6 gigawatts of computing power based on AMD GPUs, which will become one of the largest AI clusters in the world.

As part of the collaboration, OpenAI will be using AMD Instinct server accelerators, including the latest MI300X, to scale its AI models.

Against the backdrop of global interest in generative AI, companies are striving to diversify their hardware base. The partnership with AMD allows OpenAI to reduce dependence on suppliers and use more flexible solutions for the development and training of AI models.

The partnership covers the hardware platform, software tools, and infrastructure optimization, including ROCm and open standards.

The first deployment of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs with a capacity of 1 gigawatt is expected to begin in the second half of 2026.

AMD, in turn, will give OpenAI the opportunity to purchase up to 160 million shares of the company, representing about 10% at a price of just 1 cent per share. This effectively means that for its work, OpenAI will receive a significant stake in one of the most advanced technology companies in the USA.
