The JEDEC organization, which is responsible for the standardization of semiconductor technologies, has published a teaser for the new generation of flash memory — UFS 5.0 (Universal Flash Storage), which will replace UFS 4.0/4.1. Compared to its predecessor, the data transfer speed will increase by 1.86 times.

  • Increased speed up to 10.8 GB/s to meet the needs of AI devices. In comparison, the maximum speed for UFS 4.x is 5800 MB/s, while eMMC, which is still found in budget smartphones, is capped at 250 MB/s.
  • Link equalization implemented to guarantee signal integrity
  • Separate power line implemented to isolate noise between the PHY and memory subsystem
  • Inline Hashing for protecting data from interception by hardware

JEDEC has already published a brief description of the standard on its website, with final approval expected by the end of 2025. The first devices supporting UFS 5.0 may appear as early as 2026.
