Without a panoramic roof and with fabric seats: Tesla unveiled the cheapest Model Y
Tesla launched a new base version of its best-selling electric car. The Model Y Standard costs $41,630 including delivery — $5,000 cheaper than the previous base model due to simplified equipment.
What is known
The Model Y Standard is a simplified crossover. To reduce the price, Tesla removed several features and options:
- The panoramic glass roof has been replaced with a metal one
- Leather seats gave way to combined ones with fabric inserts
- The front light strips have been simplified
- The steering column is manually adjustable, not electrically
- The ventilation for the front seats is gone
- No heating for the rear seats
- The 8-inch rear touchscreen has been removed (the central 15.4-inch remains)
The base 18-inch wheels can be swapped for 19-inch ones for $1,500. Color choices are limited to three: Stealth Grey (standard), Pearl White (+$1,000), and Diamond Black (+$1,500).
The Model Y Standard is equipped with one electric motor on the rear axle with a power of 300 hp and a slightly reduced battery of 69.5 kWh. The range is 321 miles (517 km), acceleration from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) takes 6.8 seconds.
In comparison: the Model Y Long Range drives 357 miles (574 km) and accelerates in 5.7 seconds. There is a difference in characteristics, but it is not dramatic.
Several additional options are available:
- Towing package ($1,000) capable of withstanding up to 1588 kg
- Support for automated driving Full Self-Driving (Supervised) for $8,000
- Fast home charger ($450), adding about 70 km of range per hour
Even with all the options, the Model Y Standard will cost a maximum of $53,630. This is significantly cheaper than the Model Y Performance, which starts at nearly $60,000.
| Version | Price (USD) | Range | 0–60 mph (0–96 km/h) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tesla Model Y Standard | $41,630 | 321 miles | 6.8 s |
| Tesla Model Y Premium | $46,630 | 357 miles | 5.4 s |
| Tesla Model Y Premium AWD | $50,630 | 327 miles | 4.6 s |
| Tesla Model Y Performance | $59,130 | 306 miles | 3.3 s |
This is not the long-awaited Tesla for under $30,000 that was talked about before, but the Model Y Standard still offers a good price-to-features ratio. Together with the recently presented Model 3 Standard for $38,630, Tesla is shaping a more affordable lineup by simplifying existing models — abandoning the idea of a fundamentally new budget electric car.
Deliveries of the Model Y Standard will begin in the coming months.
