The only seven-seat electric crossover from the German brand is being discontinued, but a replacement is already in development.

What is known

Mercedes-Benz is discontinuing the EQB model. The first and only seven-seat electric vehicle from the company will not be offered in the US and Canada after the 2025 model year, confirmed a company representative to InsideEVs.

“The EQB has reached the end of its planned life cycle and therefore will not be offered in the US and Canada after the 2025 model year,” the representative said. “Mercedes-Benz remains fully committed to electrification, and the largest model update in the brand’s history is just around the corner. As announced at IAA Mobility 2023, Mercedes-Benz will also present two SUVs based on a new architecture.”

The EQB is built on the aging MFA platform, introduced in 2011. The crossover debuted in 2021 as an electric alternative to the gasoline and diesel GLB.

The 70.5 kWh battery accepts a maximum of 100 kW from a fast-charging station, which is not the best indicator by today’s standards. According to Mercedes-Benz, charging from 10% to 80% takes about 35 minutes. The EPA range is from 205 to 251 miles (330 to 404 kilometers).

The EQB will soon have a successor. The new model will likely be called GLB with EQ Technology and will debut next year alongside the new electric GLA. Built on the same MMA architecture as the latest generation CLA sedan, the new crossovers will receive a significant technological upgrade.

The battery will transition from a 400-volt system to an 800-volt system, allowing for much higher charging speeds. In the electric CLA, the maximum charging power is 320 kW, allowing for charging from 10% to 80% in just 22 minutes at a powerful DC station.

Like the new CLA, the GLB will also be available with gasoline engines. The MMA platform of the German automaker is initially designed to be primarily suitable for electric vehicles, and secondly for hybrid powertrains.
