Apple is developing a foldable tablet, but its estimated price reaches $4000
Apple continues to work on its first foldable tablet — the iPad Fold, which may become the company's most expensive and largest device. According to Bloomberg, its launch has been postponed until at least 2029, and the estimated price may reach $3,900 — almost three times more than the current cost of the iPad Pro 13. However, maybe Apple just knows something about the inflation rate in 2029.
The tablet will feature an 18-inch foldable display that Apple is developing jointly with Samsung Display. The main challenges are reducing the weight and eliminating the visible crease on the screen. The device will resemble a regular 13-inch laptop in folded form and will not have an external display, so it can only be used when unfolded.
Huawei MateBook Fold, which is already available on the market, shows how far Apple is behind in this segment: the Chinese competitor has a similar 18-inch screen, weighs only 1.16 kg (2.56 pounds), and costs less than $3,500. This raises doubts about the competitiveness of the iPad Fold if Apple cannot offer something fundamentally new.
It is still unknown whether the device will be positioned as an iPad or a new class of Mac tablets. But one thing is clear: Apple is in no hurry to enter the foldable device market, aiming to perfect the product — even if it means years of delay.
