Record: Skoda Superb TDI traveled 2831 km on one tank
Miko Marczyk, the European rally champion, traveled a record distance of 2831 kilometers in a standard Škoda Superb 2.0 TDI. He drove from Poland to Disneyland Paris and back on a single tank of fuel.
What is known
The Škoda Superb in the base market configuration for Poland, Essence, is equipped with a 66-liter fuel tank, which was filled to the brim before the record trip. Under the hood is a 2.0 TDI turbo diesel engine with a power of 110 kW (150 hp) and a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission with dual clutch. The car is front-wheel drive, with standard 16-inch wheel rims. The official fuel consumption in the WLTP mixed cycle is 4.8 liters per 100 kilometers.
Miko received this Superb in November 2024, and attempted the record run at the beginning of March this year. Before the control run, he managed to drive about 20,000 kilometers in the car.
Miko made only one change to the design — he installed Sportline springs, reducing the ground clearance by 15 millimeters to improve aerodynamics. The car was also equipped with low rolling resistance tires. According to the racer, brand-new tires are not ideal and should be slightly worn for such experiments.
The driving scheme itself was relatively standard. Miko maintained a speed of about 80 km/h, at which the power unit is most efficient. He also used the Eco mode and maintained a safe distance from other cars.
The escort vehicle drove ahead at a distance of two to three kilometers, informing Miko about the route. "Even minor details mattered, such as a slight incline towards the toll point, which helped me lift my foot off the gas pedal earlier and barely brake until I reached the barrier," he said.
Despite careful planning, Miko still sees opportunities for improvement. "Germany proved to be quite challenging. At night, the temperature was around 1°C, which is not optimal in terms of fuel consumption. There were also long climbs of more than five kilometers, which increased fuel consumption further. On the way back through France, I had a 200-kilometer stretch with a tailwind, where the consumption was only about 2.2 liters per 100 kilometers," he describes his impressions of the route.
The next goal of 29-year-old Miko Marczyk is to travel over 3000 kilometers on one tank.
