Phil Spencer said that the next generation Xbox will be a regular gaming PC without exclusive games
Microsoft is preparing a new Xbox console, which, according to Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, will be designed exclusively by Microsoft—unlike the portable ROG Xbox Ally console created by Asus. In an interview with the Japanese publication Famitsu, Spencer confirmed that the next generation Xbox will be a purely Microsoft hardware product, although he did not name the exact launch date.
At the Tokyo Game Show, Spencer also emphasized that the new console will continue the course of integrating platforms—Xbox, PC, and cloud gaming—into a single ecosystem. This means the future console may not have any exclusive games, which traditionally stimulate the purchase of Xbox itself.
Xbox President Sarah Bond previously described the future console as "very premium" and "extremely high-level," but it is still unclear whether the new system will be similar to the Xbox Series X|S or rather an OEM device. Rumor has it that Microsoft, together with AMD, is working on a new console based on the APU Magnus, although insiders, including Moore's Law is Dead, claim that the bulk of the work is being done by AMD engineers.
Critics suggest that the new Xbox may actually prove to be a gaming PC branded by Microsoft—and cost significantly more than the Xbox Series X or the future PlayStation 6. Spencer assured that Microsoft is not leaving the hardware market, but if the new console is indeed based on Windows and lacks exclusives, it may cast doubt on its status as a full-fledged console.
