The US government is considering banning TP-Link routers due to cybersecurity threats. As reported by The Washington Post, the initiative is led by the Department of Commerce, supported by several agencies, including the Departments of Defense, Justice, and Homeland Security. The investigation into the company has been ongoing for over a year.

What is known

The American authorities fear that TP-Link may have ties to China and may be subject to Chinese laws, even though the company officially became independent of the Chinese TP-Link Technologies in 2022. The concerns are that China could force the company to pass on user data or send malicious updates to devices.

TP-Link denies all accusations. Company representatives claim that it has no obligations to the Chinese authorities and operates independently. They also say that the ban will not affect China but the American company TP-Link USA.

TP-Link routers TP-Link are among the most popular in the US, according to the company, it controls 36% of the market, although some experts say that this figure could reach 60%. This is partly explained by the fact that TP-Link sells its technology at lower prices, pushing out competitors.
