Google has introduced an update for the Google Maps app on Android and iOS with integration of the Gemini artificial intelligence. It's now not just a navigator, but a digital assistant.

What is known

Google Maps can now give directions based on real landmarks, like gas stations, restaurants, or famous buildings, rather than just the standard "turn left in 500 meters." For example, you might hear: "turn right at the gas station" or "across the road from the restaurant." This greatly facilitates understanding the route under real conditions.

Gemini will replace Google Assistant in navigation mode. The assistant will be accessible via an icon on the screen or voice activation by the phrase "Hey, Google." You can ask it questions about places on the route: where to have lunch, what dishes are popular in that establishment, if there is parking nearby, or if you can charge an electric car there.

Google Maps now uses Gemini for proactive road condition alerts. Google states that these alerts can be received "even if you're not using navigation."

Gemini not only helps find places but also handles complex queries. For example: "Find a budget vegan restaurant two miles from me. How's the parking there?" — and starts navigation. You can also ask to add an event to the calendar, like a soccer practice for tomorrow, and Gemini will do this automatically.

Gemini features will be "progressively rolled out over the course of this month" for Maps users with Android and iOS devices in the US. Future support is expected on Android Auto.
