Pinterest CEO Bill Ready announced that the company actively uses open source artificial intelligence models for visual tasks.

What is known

Pinterest applies AI for personalized recommendations, multimodal search, targeted advertising, and the new Pinterest Assistant feature. According to Ready, adapted open source models provide "cost reductions" compared to leading commercial models.

Amid this, the company forecasts fourth-quarter revenue in the range of $1.31–1.34 billion, whereas the average analyst forecast was $1.34 billion. The weaker expectations were attributed to tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, which affected the home goods category. After the forecast was released, the company's shares fell by more than 21%.

Ready explained that Pinterest is considering the possibility of implementing agentic commerce — when artificial intelligence independently acts on behalf of the user, for instance, finding and ordering items that may interest them. Currently, the platform already offers "quick purchase" through a partnership with Amazon: users can click on items found through Pinterest and proceed to purchase. However, the company is still exploring whether users are ready to fully trust AI's automated decision-making in such matters.

Pinterest is also launching personalized boards formed with the help of artificial intelligence — which takes into account both the user's actions on the platform (their saves, collections, likes) and expert selections. Additionally, the new Pinterest Assistant analyzes user preferences and provides advice or recommendations based on their activity and style.
