Apple is developing new satellite communication features for future iPhone models. According to Mark Gurman, the company is exploring further integration options for technologies that began use in 2022 with the launch of Emergency SOS.
What is known
One of the directions considered is creating its own satellite service, which could reduce dependence on partners like Globalstar or SpaceX. However, Apple management traditionally refrains from such an idea. The company believes it should not act as a communication operator.
- Third-party app support: developers will gain access to iPhone's satellite features for their applications, including messengers.
- Satellite navigation: using maps even without preloading or mobile coverage.
- Enhanced messaging capabilities: support for photos in satellite messages, unlike the current format that only supports text.
- Natural use: currently, open sky is needed for connection. In the future, the connection will work even in a pocket, car, or building.
- 5G NTN (Non-Terrestrial Networks): future iPhones will be able to use satellite capabilities as part of the 5G network, providing coverage in areas with weak signals.
Developments are aimed at increasing device functionality in areas with unstable or non-existent cellular coverage, especially outside urban infrastructure.
