Wikipedia has urged developers of generative artificial intelligence to use its content responsibly. Specifically, it concerns the need to switch to the paid Wikimedia Enterprise platform.

What is known

The Wikimedia Foundation blog, which manages the online encyclopedia, states that it is important to adhere to proper attribution for authors and access data through the official API.

The paid service allows large-scale use of information without overloading servers and at the same time supports Wikipedia's non-commercial mission. Although the organization has not announced legal steps against scraping, it recently detected suspicious activity. In May and June, significant traffic came from AI bots masquerading as humans and trying to avoid detection. At the same time, the number of views by real users decreased by eight percent compared to last year.

The Wikimedia Foundation emphasized that declining visit rates threaten to reduce the number of volunteers and donors. Companies that use Wikipedia data must cite the source and contribute to the platform's development. Earlier this year, the Foundation presented its own AI implementation strategy, which involves using technology to automate editorial processes without replacing humans.
